Piano Masterclass with Melvyn Tan
September 2018, 10-16

Melvyn Tan
Born in Singapore in 1956, Melvyn Tan is based in London. He moved to England at the age of twelve to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School and subsequently enrolledat the Royal College of Music. Tan established his international reputation with pioneering performances on fortepiano. His artistic partnership with Sir Roger Norrington and the London Classical Players delivered a series of landmark performances and albums in the 1980s and early 1990s. They recorded Beethoven’s five piano concertos for EMI Classics, among other works, and also undertook a European tour during which Tan performed on Beethoven’s Broadwood fortepiano of 1817. The versatility, insight and imagination of Melvyn Tan’s interpretations have been acclaimed worldwide. He performs today on the fortepiano and concert grand piano, gracing the latter with his profound knowledge of historical playing styles. His passion for the French repertoire, ignited by lessons with Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlemuter, and expertise in Classical and early Romantic music, are clearly reflected in a repertoire that spans everything from Bach and Rameau to Chopin and Debussy, from Cage and Messiaen to new music by today’s composers. Tan has appeared as recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist at many of the world’s leading concert halls, from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and London’s Wigmore Hall to New York’s Lincoln Center, and at the Salzburg and Edinburgh festivals. He travels regularly to Singapore for orchestral and recital performances and to teach young musicians. Since September 2012 he has shared his knowledge of pianos old and new and of the art of interpretation as Artist in Residence at Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory.
